The access to the university is getting harder every time for the students in Spain – and all that comes with it (rent, bills, food, public transport fare,…) According to the Spanish Rectors ‘Conference (CRUE) “Spain is one of the most expensive countries to study a degree and at has one of the weakest and unsatisfactory scholarship system among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE) countries. And looking at the last data available, this breach between enrolment costs and students’ scholarships is bigger every year.
The average cost of the credit on the Spanish public universities was in 2009. 13,85 euros . In 2015 it was 18, 51 euros. As a result, the average cost of the university enrolment went up from 800 to 1100 euros. This significant raise (almost 5 euros) of the credit is emphasized with an even worse number, the amount of public scholarships for students.
The thing is that average amount of the scholarships is at the same level as for the 2006/2007 academic year and only 27% of the students were awarded, a very low number compared to rest of the European countries
From CRUE they think that a bigger effort must be done in to guarantee equally access conditions to the students. To solve the problem, they propose to establish a standard cost by degree, reducing this way the current price difference by region in Spain.
