Tomorrow, Saturday April 23th, it is celebrated Sant Jordi’s day, also known as the day of the book and the rose, coinciding with the anniversary of Sant Jordi, patron saint of Cataluña and the International day of the book. In Cataluña this festivity is celebrated differently, in a special way where every street in every village and city is flooded with stands of books and roses. As it is tradition in this day, people take the streets to buy and give a book or a rose to their beloved ones.
The origin of Sant Jordi’s festivity dates back to the 3rd century with a roman soldier (Sant Jordi) who was tourtured and beheaded for refusing to chase Christians. Since then, he was worshipped as a martyr and many legends where created around his figure like the one of the drangon that frightened his village, to which he killed and with the blood of the dragon a rose arose that he gave to his beloved, the princess.
Back to our days, and given the close relation of this festivity with the literary world, this day gathers more writers every year that use this moment to sign their books to the readers who want to. Besides the signature of books, many other different activities are made during the day, like the open day in Palacio de la Generalitat, Exhibitions, meetings or concerts.
As we will be closed tomorrow in SIGMA we have anticipated Sant Jordi a few hours and at least our colleagues have already received their first rose (view gallery)
